Will Main Street ever return?

For those of you interested in Architectural History, there was an event in this country in 1893 that influenced the Architecture of America more than any other since. This event, held in Chicago, commemorated the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. It was known as the Colombian Exposition, or more simply, the Chicago World's Fair of 1893.

Before the fair ever happened, it was a big deal to even win the rights to have the fair. Chicago and New York fought for more than a year to see who would host. When Chicago was chosen in 1891, it seemed almost an impossible task to design all of the necessary buildings in so short a time. The effort was lead by Architects Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root (Root died before the grounds were completed) and they enlisted the best and brightest of their day to participate in the designs of the Buildings and Grounds. Included among them were Louis Sullivan, McKim Meade and White, Frederick Law Olmstead, and George B. Post among others. Now, I won't go into details about the fair itself, but I will say that the aesthetic was decidedly Classical. Columns and pillars as far as the eye could see and all at a scale that was more impressive than Disneyland. In fact, the buildings were so amazing that it brought in over 1 million people a day at its peak. That may not seem like a lot, but this was 1893, in the middle of a severe recession, and the only way to travel cross country with any speed was by train. Considering the circumstances, this was impressive.

A by product of the Fair's success was the creation of a new style of civic architecture. People were so taken with the Neoclassical revival that practically every big city adopted the same Architectural Language for the creation of their public buildings. From state capitals to banks to libraries, many new large projects constructed after the fair bore strikingly similar profiles to those in the Colombian Exposition. Now this is not to say that Classical Architecture was not used before, just not at the same scale as after the 1893 Fair. Even the United States Capitol Building in Washington DC was expanded (in 1904) to reflect a grander scale for a rapidly growing nation. Downtowns in every major city were bustling with new buildings and a cohesive Architecture that gave people Civic Pride and a sense of unity in their towns.

Now I don't have to tell you what happened next. In the middle of the 20th century, downtowns and Main Streets were being abandoned for the suburbs with tract houses and strip malls. People moved out of cities at an alarming rate and many great cities died as a result of this. Beautiful turn of the century buildings were torn down as developers moved in and bought up city blocks to build office buildings. The city became a place of business, not a place to live. McKim Meade and White's Pennsylvania Station was torn down in 1963 to build Madison Square Garden and One Penn Plaza and it's limestone columns were sent to the swamps of New Jersey where they still lay buried in the muck.

Fortunately, time heals all wounds. Main Streets are being re-discovered for their irreplaceable Architecture and the benefits of city living. Where I live, the most expensive towns to live in are the ones with beautiful historic downtowns where new restaurants and boutiques are thriving. This has always been a country where you have choices. It seems we are always at a crossroads waiting to choose. So with the national economy in the toilet, and the McMansion housing bubble burst, the question is this: Can it be possible for future generations to rediscover a smaller, higher quality lifestyle or will Walmart wipe out every store in the country? I think you know which way I'm leaning.

Contemporary Kitchen In Bamboo

The bamboo wood allow us to create remarkable environments according to an avant-garde and functional concept. This beautiful Contemporary Kitchen in Bamboo is designed by Block Cocinas and the idea behind this design is that …the kitchens are not laboratories, they are spaces for living. That’s why in these days the offices are joined to the living rooms making a whole, therefore the formal aspect becomes essential when developing a perfect furnishing plan. In this contemporary kitchen, the spaces are divided, wide areas and surfaces where people can move comfortably and share the tasks. The wood, made of delimited lines and bold colour contrasts, coexists and compliments perfectly with the rest of materials. The steels, aluminiums, natural stones and unpolluted white cooking hobs, highlight its presence. The white fronts, made up with high pressure and bright lamination over navy blue worksurface, bathing in calm the whole collection.

Futuristic 36E8 Italian Kitchen

Designed by Daniele Lago, the futuristic, elegant and stylish kitchen 36E8 is an odd mixture of styles as its name indicates. The kitchen is designed in typical Italian style with plenty of bright shades, lots of glossy finishes and yet very modern and minimalistic approach towards the shelves and the space available. Despite its bright appearance, it is highly organized, can be altered to suit various needs and from what we understand, you can have your picnic lunch in it by just changing the flooring for the occasion! Spacious and sleek, 36E8 is a pretty modern and unique kitchen.

Round Modern Kitchen Countertops

Round kitchen countertops could become a new trend in kitchens design, because of super ergonomic technologies, a gorgeous minimal look and the round countertop that gives an impressive amount of possibilities. Isn’t that cool when you can reach your stove, shelves, fridge, cutting board and other stuff needed to cook without making a step? Finally I can say that the kitchens are so beautiful and stylish that you’ll want to spend more time in your kitchen than ever before.

Inspirational Kitchen Cabinetry

Kitchen cabinetry has to be one of the most important elements in kitchen design. Sadly enough, it often is an area that is overlooked only to be regretted later due to the high cost of replacing. This wonderful kitchen cabinetry is from Material Process Systems (MPS) who specializes in creating wonderful kitchens. You can see from the pictures their eye for detail. I really do like the acrylic style bar stools in the way they compliment the kitchen bar. These cabinets featured a natural looking wood stain which goes very well with the stainless fixtures.

The Ultimate Stainless Steel Kitchen

In the ultimate stainless steel kitchen, designer Marco Gorini has created a masterpiece from a single stainless steel block. This project was called the "Non Plus Ultra Evolution" with the inspiration to create a real work station for the serious cook. Looking at the back side image, it does appear to be a work station where a cook can immerse himself or herself in the art of cooking. This kitchen comes from Strato, an Italian manufacturer. The amount of stainless steel used perhaps, draws its inspiration from commercial kitchens where stainless is a staple raw material due to its durability and ease of cleaning. Now, I am not sure how much the stainless steel kitchen may weigh, but you may want to be careful if considering this for anywhere but a ground floor in a home.

Kitchen From The Vela Quadra Series

Here are some amazing pictures featuring kitchens made by Dada. This series is called "Vela Quadra" created by designer, Ferrucio Laviani. One feature I like is the great flexibility within the designs. First off, there are a many different colors to choose from to shape your kitchen colors to match the theme of your house. Also, there is a multitude of design options. Just from the kitchen pictures alone you can see the different islands, cabinetry, shape, and thickness of the design elements. I do like the approach by Dada since you can shape the look you want while building something that fits your family's needs.

Kitchen Design That Stir The Imagination

Here are some sample kitchens created by Adam at Artistic Kitchen Designs. This is the "Maxima" line which features a semi-circular kitchen island at its centerpiece. The shape invites interaction of family and friends while providing a lot of space to move around. An interesting feature is the handle-free cabinets which create a first impression of a smooth wall as opposed to typical kitchen cabinetry. In one photo the black and white cabinet wall is creates a wonderful contrast to the kitchen island.

Friendly Kitchen Cabinetry

Alno offers an eco-friendly line of kitchen cabinetry as you can see from the pictures. This kitchen is located in Austin, Texas in the "Healthy Child, Healthy World Green Home". The kitchen cabinetry is made from recycled and regenerated wood from certified resources. All paint features non-toxic varieties which limit greenhouse gases and provide a safer place for families with small children.

Kitchen Color Trend Abound In Flux

Flux by Scavolini touches on kitchen color trends with its bold offerings in metallic gloss red and metallic gloss purple. While red has become much more popular in kitchen design purple challenges our imagination and tendencies in interior decorating. Another striking feature is the curvy shapes of in the kitchen cabinetry. Flux offers "curved" cabinets that extend out from the floor or ceiling to create a whole different perspective on accepted kitchen shapes.

Kitchen Remodeling Ideas And Photos

It's exciting thinking about kitchen remodeling ideas since that is a big investment for a home owner. There is a payback however in how it revalues the property and makes it more attractive when it goes for sale in the real estate marketplace. These kitchen remodeling ideas are a little different for Furniture Fashion since we focused on more traditional designs. I know many of our readers prefer this decorating style, so this story is for you. The kitchen photos come from Scavolini as standard designs in their kitchen offerings that can be found here. Hopefully, if you are thinking of kitchen remodeling, there are some ideas to be taken away from these photos.

Paper Leaf Wreath

Hi Bloggers and welcome to another Met Monday and Make Your Monday! Join our hostess' and all the participants at Between Naps on the Porch and Twice Remembered!

Is it too early for a fall project? I didn't think you'd mind...If you have a spare 15 minutes here is what you can accomplish with very little money.

Your local arts and craft store will carry this item, it's kind of a flat circle wreath form, very inexpensive at $1.99

We do love the Dollar Tree! Stop by and pick yourself up 3 packages of these beautiful leaves. To me, they look like crepe paper. They have wire and a stem too. They have 3 different colors, you can mix them up like I did, or you can use one color.

I cut off the stem and started gluing on the leaves, overlapping slightly, alternating colors

Proceed around the whole wreath

Until you have something that looks like this:

Because of the wire in the leaves, I was able to bend them up here and there...

I know I want to use ribbon as a hanger, and I love the gingham or the hounds tooth..........

But wait! What about the plaid or the check?

Decisions, decisions!!!

Ultimately, I chose the gingham, it offered the most contrast, but really all of them would be fun to use.

I plan on making 4 total to hang on the living room windows, and in the kitchen.

When I officially start to decorize for autumn, I'll show you pictures...I'm sure I'll have my camera handy! wink wink

Thank you for joining me for another Met Monday and my very first Make Your Monday! Thanks to Susan and Kim for hosting! I can't wait to see what you guys have been up to!

Kitchen Design Inspirations

For those that are serious about the way the kitchen looks like, Any way a few ideas to choose from. With a modern design and features a combination of stainless steel and LED lighting, the Venus kitchen uses a Solid Surface top to make the countertop. It has plenty of storage and though simple, it’s really eye-catching. The Skyline kitchen is a bit different, with an ergonomically adapt design, great color combination and great functionality, it looks pretty neat and uses every space at its best. Last one is the Time kitchen. It looks classic and is not really my style, but I’m sure there are people who’d choose one, if asked. It has lots of details, either teak, cherry, light oak, dark oak or matte lacquer, a 9cm thick worktop and side panels that symmetrically follow the lines of the cabinet.

Tablescape Thursday

Welcome to Tablescape Thursday!
This is a particularly lovely week to participate because our dear hostess is celebrating her blogversary all week long! Congrats Susan and thank you for hosting! Make sure you run by and visit Susan and everyone at BNOTP!

At this time of year I get a little frazzled...it's BACK TO SCHOOL! I have to adjust as much as my son does!! This year Keegan is entering the 7th grade and I'm still shaking my head....

where does the time go....

So this week I thought I would do a back to school table in honor of my son, much to his chagrin...

I was shopping at my local thrift shop (why do most of my sentences start that way?) and I stumbled across some really cute chalkboards...they are about the size of a clipboard and I initially thought that they would be fun for Logan to scribble on...I found three of them for .99 each. All of them nicely seasoned, I could still faintly see the penmanship of another little child...how sweet!

I know I had Sunflowers last week...but...I just love them and how perfect for back to school.

My creamy sunburst plates and swirly yellow dessert plates are making their appearance...you're probably sick of seeing the little yellow ones huh?

An apple for the teacher....

I mixed and matched my linens...I have had the sunflower napkins for about ten years now, I bought them at Wal-mart...back when they had good stuff...and I paired them with a woven red placemat

I just love the linens...

I painted little wooden tags with chalkboard paint and used them for place cards...

I thought that the yardsticks were a cute addition to the table

Well thank you for joining me for another tablescape, hope you visit again soon!

Here is Keegan: My Jr. High Schooler!! Love this kid!!

Good Luck this year!!
